Soul Sister
(for Marie Kelly)
Richard D. Gordon

I'm sure
we were friends
before we met,
and that
some measure
of what I am,
comes from you.

On a distant star,
our souls,
each with a single
virtue, must've
touched and drew,
one from the other,
a quality not common
before.

Your gift
mingled with
the essence of me
and created
a new sensation
to share.

I gave you tears,
you gave me laughter.
I gave you peace,
you gave me honesty.
I gave you courage,
you gave me humility.

We touched, and
like electricity
giving up sparks,
we grew in character
until we approached
being born.

We hitched a ride home
on the same comet, but
touched earth at separate
times.

We knew nothing
of our times before,
until our paths crossed
and our eyes met.
I Knew
I was your Brother.
In the instant
our eyes touched,
our hearts exchanged
another gift.
